Healing After Trauma: 7 Gentle Steps to Start Again (Faith-Based)

If you’ve experienced dysfunction or trauma, you may feel like you should be ‘over it’ by now. But healing isn’t a straight line—and you don’t have to rush it. As a nurse and a woman who has walked through my own hard seasons, I want to offer you a few gentle steps that can help you begin again with Jesus at the center.

1) Name what happened (without shame)

You don’t have to share every detail, but you do need honesty. Trauma thrives in secrecy and confusion. A simple sentence like, ‘That hurt me,’ is a brave beginning.

2) Ask God for daily strength

Sometimes the most spiritual prayer is the simplest: ‘Jesus, help me today.’ Healing often looks like receiving strength for the next right step—not having everything figured out.

3) Create one safe rhythm

Pick one small rhythm that tells your nervous system, ‘I’m safe.’ A short walk, a cup of tea and a Psalm, journaling for 5 minutes—small is powerful.

4) Replace lies with truth

Trauma often leaves behind loud messages: ‘It was my fault,’ ‘I’m too broken,’ ‘I’ll never change.’ Write one lie down, then write one truth from Scripture beside it.

5) Choose one supportive person

Healing is hard to do alone. If you have one safe friend, mentor, counselor, or coach—reach out. You don’t need a crowd. You need one steady, kind presence.

6) Practice boundaries as protection

Boundaries aren’t punishment—they’re protection. A boundary can be as simple as, ‘I’m not available for that conversation,’ or ‘I need time before I respond.’

7) Get help with a plan

If you’re ready for support, a simple plan can make healing feel possible. In coaching, we focus on faith, practical steps, and steady encouragement—so you can move forward without pressure or shame.
